Identifying processes that promote coral reef recovery and resilience is crucial as ocean warming becomes more frequent and severe. Sexual reproduction is essential for the replenishment of coral populations and maintenance of genetic diversity; however, the ability for corals to reproduce may be impaired by marine heatwaves that cause coral bleaching. In 2014 and 2015, the Hawaiian Islands experienced coral bleaching with differential bleaching susceptibility in the species Montipora capitata, a dominant reef-building coral in the region.

Temperature and Neurologic Outcomes in Neonates Undergoing Cardiac Surgery: A Society of Thoracic Surgeons Study.

Background: There is significant variability in postoperative neurological injury rates in patients with congenital heart disease, with early injuries impacting long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes; therefore, there is an urgent need for identifying effective strategies to mitigate such injuries.

Objectives: This study aims to assess the association between nadir intraoperative temperature (NIT) and early neurological outcomes in neonates undergoing congenital heart surgery.

Methods: Analyzing data from 24,345 neonatal cardiac operations from the Society for Thoracic Surgeons Congenital Heart Surgery Database between 2010 and 2019, NIT was assessed using a mixed-effect logistic regression model, targeting major neurological injury (stroke, seizure, or deficit at discharge) as a primary endpoint.

Introduction: Surgery residents who complete a nondesignated preliminary year have an additional year of training compared to those who begin as categorical residents. While this additional year is sometimes perceived negatively, these more experienced residents may outperform traditional categorical (TC) residents in their first year of training.

Methods: Operative assessment ratings were recorded for first year categorical general surgery residents in the United States between 2015 and 2023 using the Society for Improving Medical and Professional Learning assessment platform.

Noninvasive Ventilation or CPAP in the Initial Treatment Phase of Small Infants With Respiratory Failure.

Background: Respiratory failure in infants is a common reason for admission to the pediatric ICU (PICU). Although high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) is the preferred first-line treatment at our institution, some infants require CPAP or noninvasive ventilation (NIV). Here we report our experience using CPAP/NIV in infants < 10 kg.

Geographic and demographic trends with the initiation of virtual interviews in general surgery: A 7-program evaluation.

Background: Although most general surgery residency interviews remain virtual, the effect of this format remains understudied. Single-institution data have shown an increase in the number of applications received and interviews conducted with virtual interviewing but no change in the geographic backgrounds of interviewed or matched applicants. This study sought to compare national trends in geographic characteristics of general surgery applicants, interviewed applicants, and matched applicants between in-person and virtual application cycles.
