Complete Genome Sequences of Two Distinct Strains of Serratia marcescens Isolated from Contaminated Platelet Concentrates from Canadian Donors.

In this report, we present the genome sequences of two strains isolated as contaminants from platelet concentrates by Canadian Blood Services and designated CBS2010/11 (CBS11) and CBS2010/12 (CBS12). Genomic sequence analyses showed that CBS11 has one chromosome and one plasmid (pAM01), whereas CBS12 has no plasmids.

Background: Hand hygiene (HH) compliance remains low in many intensive care units (ICU). Technology has been suggested to improve HH compliance.We describe the introduction of an electronic HH surveillance and intervention system into the general ICU of a tertiary care teaching hospital, the obstacles to success and reasons for the system's ultimate failure and removal.

Retropharyngeal calcific tendonitis is an inflammatory process of the superior oblique tendons of the longus colli muscle, a neck flexor in the upper cervical spine, caused by deposition of calcium hydroxyapatite crystals; the definitive diagnostic test is computed tomography (CT). Presented in this article are two cases seen at our institution. Patients typically present with acute onset of neck pain/spasm, odynophagia, dysphagia, and/or low grade fevers.

Garlic has been known to have antiplatelet properties. Because of the lack of major clinical data regarding the safety of concomitant use of garlic supplements and anticoagulants, we decided to evaluate the safety of using garlic extract along with oral anticoagulation therapy. During this project we tested aged garlic extract (AGE), a commercial garlic preparation, with warfarin (Coumadin).
