Background And Aims: Serotonin (5-hydroxtryptamine, 5-HT) is an important factor in gut function, playing key roles in intestinal peristalsis and secretion, and in sensory signalling in the brain-gut axis. Removal from its sites of action is mediated by a specific protein called the serotonin reuptake transporter (SERT or 5-HTT). Polymorphisms in the promoter region of the SERT gene have effects on transcriptional activity, resulting in altered 5-HT reuptake efficiency.

Single-nucleotide polymorphism alleles in the insulin receptor gene are associated with typical migraine.

We have identified a migraine locus on chromosome 19p13.3/2 using linkage and association analysis. We isolated 48 single-nucleotide polymorphisms within the locus, of which we genotyped 24 in a Caucasian population comprising 827 unrelated cases and 765 controls.

Adaptation of Ilizarov ring fixator to the economic situation of developing countries.

Especially in countries with low per capita income, poor patients with open fractures and non-unions are unable to purchase modern, commercially produced surgical implants. To alleviate this situation, we initiated the production of a locally made ring fixator. The rings were cut from tubes cast from scrap aluminium.
