Article Synopsis
  • - The first clinical trial using induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cells for treating steroid-resistant acute graft-versus-host disease involved 15 participants, focusing on safety and efficacy up to 2 years.
  • - At the 2-year follow-up, 60% of participants (9 out of 15) survived, showing better outcomes compared to previous studies for this condition.
  • - The treatment (CYP-001) showed no serious adverse effects, tumors, or safety concerns, suggesting it was safe and well tolerated over the follow-up period.

Survival for older patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) unsuitable for intensive chemotherapy is unsatisfactory. Standard nonintensive therapies have low response rates and only extend life by a few months. Quizartinib is an oral Fms-like tyrosine kinase 3 (FLT3) inhibitor with reported activity in wild-type patients.

Article Synopsis
  • During the COVID-19 pandemic, King's College Hospital developed a collaborative approach between Paediatric Dentistry and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) to treat pediatric patients with dental pain effectively, despite limited access to general anaesthetic.
  • During the lockdown from March to June, 420 calls were triaged, resulting in 67 patients seen face-to-face; 41% were treated under local anaesthetic, while only 13% required general anaesthetic.
  • The study showcases that the majority of pediatric patients could be treated successfully without general anaesthetic, highlighting the benefits of collaboration in patient care during challenging times like lockdowns.

The therapeutic potential of donor-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) has been investigated in diverse diseases, including steroid-resistant acute graft versus host disease (SR-aGvHD). However, conventional manufacturing approaches are hampered by challenges with scalability and interdonor variability, and clinical trials have shown inconsistent outcomes. Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) have the potential to overcome these challenges, due to their capacity for multilineage differentiation and indefinite proliferation.

A 48-year-old blacksmith presented to A&E after sustaining facial injuries while operating a metal punch press. Radiographs revealed the presence of a metallic foreign body within the cheek, but this was clinically impalpable. By using a neodymium rare earth magnet extraorally, it was possible to identify the position of the fragment several centimetres lateral to the entry wound.
