Background And Hypothesis: The kidneys may be susceptible to ectopic fat and its lipotoxic effects, disposing them to chronic kidney disease (CKD) in type 2 diabetes (T2D). We investigated whether the kidney parenchyma fat content and kidney sinus fat volume would be higher in persons with T2D and CKD.

Methods: Cross-sectional study including 29 controls, 27 persons with T2D and no CKD, and 48 persons with T2D and early CKD (urine albumin creatinine ratio (UACR) ≥ 30 mg/g).

Immunocompromised patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) can have a longer duration of viral shedding and persistence of symptoms. The optimal treatment strategy for these patients remains to be established. This case describes a male in his late sixties with follicular lymphoma and persistent symptoms of infection with SARS-CoV-2 variant BA.

The frequency and severity of drought events are predicted to increase due to anthropogenic climate change, with cascading effects across forested ecosystems. Management activities such as forest thinning and prescribed burning, which are often intended to mitigate fire hazard and restore ecosystem processes, may also help promote tree resistance to drought. However, it is unclear whether these treatments remain effective during the most severe drought conditions or whether their impacts differ across environmental gradients.

Article Synopsis
  • This paper explores silver gallium selenide (AGSe) as a better option than silver gallium sulfide (AGS) for detecting infrared signals beyond 10 µm, particularly in the 10 to 20 µm range.
  • AGSe has a wider transparency range up to approximately 20 µm, while AGS has limitations due to high absorption beyond 12 µm.
  • Experimental comparisons show that AGSe achieves higher upconversion efficiency and better phase matching, making it a strong candidate for long-wavelength infrared detection applications.

Background/objective: The act of surgery involves harming vulnerable patients with the intent that the results will improve their health and, ultimately, help the patients. Such activities will inevitably entail moral decisions, yet the ethics of surgery has only recently developed as a field of medical ethics. Within this field, it is striking how few accounts there are of actions within the operating room.
