Rationale: To evaluate whether common nonsynonymous variants [single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) or SNP haplotypes] in the β2-adrenergic receptor render subjects more susceptible to norepinephrine-induced immunosuppression and whether they are associated with dysregulated ex vivo and in vivo inflammatory responses.

Methods: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells from healthy volunteers (main cohort: n = 106, secondary cohort: n = 408) were ex vivo stimulated with various stimuli and production of cytokines was assessed. Additionally, ex vivo modulation of cytokine production by norepinephrine was evaluated in the main cohort.

Data repositories, like research biobanks, seek to optimise the number of responding participants while simultaneously attempting to increase the amount of data donated per participant. Such efforts aim to increase the repository's value for its uses in medical research to contribute to improve health care, especially when data linkage is permitted by participants. We investigated individuals' motives for participating in such projects and potential reasons for their withdrawal from participation in a population-based biobank.

Objective: Animal studies have demonstrated the extensive interplay between the gut microbiota and immunity. Moreover, in critically ill patients, who almost invariably suffer from a pronounced immune response, a shift in gut microbiota composition is associated with infectious complications and mortality.
