Article Synopsis
  • - Patients with repaired tetralogy of Fallot are prone to ventricular tachycardia and sudden cardiac death, with most arrhythmias linked to specific slow-conducting areas in the heart known as SCAIs.
  • - The study compared a "prophylactic" approach, which involved ablating SCAIs regardless of whether VT was induced, to a "historical" approach that used VT induction to guide treatment, focusing on reducing complications and the need for implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs).
  • - Results showed that patients who underwent prophylactic ablation had no major arrhythmic events over a median follow-up of 21 months, whereas 29% of the historical group

Article Synopsis
  • A study explored how adjusting conduction velocity (ϴ) in computational models of persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) can enhance the accuracy of simulations compared to actual patient outcomes post-ablation.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 37 patients who underwent ablation, finding that adjusting ϴ improved the model's agreement with clinical results, increasing accuracy from 46% to 65%.
  • The results suggest that personalized adjustments of ϴ, especially in patients with significant left atrial fibrosis and higher BMI, could make simulations more relevant for predicting arrhythmia recurrence after treatment.

Background: Influenza vaccination will have added importance this winter given the possibility of further waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study examines the impact of an electronic medical record (EMR) reminder on influenza vaccine uptake among eligible hospital inpatients.

Methods: We included a convenience sample of 750 adults (median age 77 years) who are eligible for influenza vaccination (⩾65 years and/or length of stay >30 days).

Background: There is an increased risk with advancing age that degenerative conditions such as dementia will affect a person's capacity to communicate. Thus, there is increased possibility that nursing students will be caring for this client group and will need to have the skills to communicate effectively. The Validation, Emotion, Reassure, Activity (VERA) framework is a communication tool developed for this purpose.
