The IgM protease (Ide gene; Gene ID 8153996) of Streptococcus suis is a putative virulence factor that has been shown to be a protective vaccine antigen for pigs (Seele et al. Vaccine 33:2207-12, 2015). To assess its potential as a cross-protective antigen, the amino acid variability among prevalent clinical isolates in various regions and among various serotypes was investigated.

Article Synopsis
  • There is currently no universally accepted method for titrating positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP) in patients on spontaneous mechanical ventilation (SMV), despite some success with electrical impedance tomography (EIT) in controlled mechanical ventilation.
  • A new approach using regional peak flow (RPF) via EIT aims to evaluate lung mechanics specifically for SMV, which was not effectively addressed by existing algorithms.
  • In a study of 25 COVID-19 ARDS patients, EIT-guided PEEP titration showed feasibility and suggested that a cumulative collapse threshold of around 5% could provide the best balance of clinical and mechanical outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers have been working on vaccines to prevent a pig disease called pseudorabies (PR) that spread quickly in China starting in 2011.
  • The old vaccine, based on a strain from 1961, isn't very effective against new and different strains of the virus.
  • A new vaccine called Porcilis® Begonia was tested, and it protected vaccinated piglets from getting sick when exposed to a dangerous new strain of the virus, while unvaccinated pigs got very sick and some even died.

Background: Extra-hepatic vitamin K-status, measured by dephosphorylated uncarboxylated matrix Gla protein (dp-ucMGP), maintains vascular health, with high levels reflecting poor vitamin K status. The occurrence of extra-hepatic vitamin K deficiency throughout the disease of COVID-19 and possible associations with pulmonary embolism (PE), and mortality in intensive care unit (ICU) patients has not been studied. The aim of this study was to investigated the association between dp-ucMGP, at endotracheal intubation (ETI) and both ICU and six months mortality.

Influenza A virus in swine (IAV-S) continues to cause significant negative impact to both sows and growing pigs. The viral hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) genes continue to evolve with HA diversifying at a faster rate than NA. Depending on country, whole inactivated virus (WIV) commercial and autogenous vaccines, as well as veterinary prescription vaccines targeting HA, are currently available.
