Across 133 confirmed mpox zoonotic index cases reported during 1970-2021 in Africa, cases occurred year-round near the equator, where climate is consistent. However, in tropical regions of the northern hemisphere under a dry/wet season cycle, cases occurred seasonally. Our findings further support the seasonality of mpox zoonotic transmission risk.

The Central African Republic (CAR) has experienced repeated mpox outbreaks since 2001. Although several mpox epidemiological risk factors for zoonotic and interhuman transmission have been documented, the reasons for more frequent epidemic outbreaks are less well understood, relying on vague explanatory categories, including deforestation, hunting, and civil unrest. To gain insight into increasingly frequent outbreaks, we undertook an ethnohistorical, eco-anthropological analysis in two CAR regions: the Lobaye prefecture, experiencing one or more annual outbreaks in the past decade, and the Sangha-Mbaere prefecture, with a longer history of mpox but less frequent outbreaks.

The predicting groundwater nitrate pollution risk, especially in terms of changes in fertilizing, has not been fully investigated so far. In particular, there is no comprehensive method to assess this risk in areas of different land use type, and not only in agricultural areas. Tailed bacteriophages and herpesviruses use a transient scaffold to assemble icosahedral capsids with hexameric capsomers on the faces and pentameric capsomers at all but one vertex where a 12-fold portal is thought to nucleate the assembly. How does the scaffold orchestrate this step? We have determined the portal vertex structure of the bacteriophage HK97 procapsid, where the scaffold is a domain of the major capsid protein. The scaffold forms rigid helix-turn-strand structures on the interior surfaces of all capsomers and is further stabilized around the portal, forming trimeric coiled-coil towers, two per surrounding capsomer.
