Over the last 6 years, a health care program aimed at the surgical correction of postburn contractures has taken place in Faridpur, Bangladesh. People in this rural region are very poor and often cannot afford medical treatment. Often secondary flexion contractures of the face and chin as well as the upper and lower extremity impede daily functioning and have an enormous psycho-social impact.

Two patients are presented in whom percutaneous radiofrequency spinal rhizotomy was complicated by contralateral paresis. Both patients were elderly and suffered from cardiac failure, chronic obstructive respiratory disease, and generalized vascular disease. Investigation of the paresis indicated a contralateral ischaemic cord lesion.

This study examines the food consumption and nutritional status of pre-school children during the period March-April, at the end of the dry season in the Kano Plain of Nyanza Province. The diet of pre-school children in this region of Kenya consists foremost of maize and milk. Food consumption was generally low with considerable deficits in energy intake and other nutrients among all age groups, although protein intake was generally at recommended levels.

A prospective study of 18 patients who underwent noncardiac surgery was performed to study the use of ketamine as an analgesic during total intravenous anaesthesia with propofol. A comparison was made with the combination propofol/fentanyl. The propofol/ketamine combination resulted in haemodynamically stable anaesthesia without the need for additional analgesics.
