Motivation: The clinical success of brain-machine interfaces depends on overcoming both biological and material challenges to ensure a long-term stable connection for neural recording and stimulation. Therefore, there is a need to quantify any damage that microelectrodes sustain when they are chronically implanted in the human cortex.

Methods: Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), we imaged 980 microelectrodes from Neuroport arrays chronically implanted in the cortex of three people with tetraplegia for 956-2246 days.

Small, portable hand-held ultrasound devices nowadays enable a widespread use of prehospital point-of-care ultrasound (pPOCUS), which has so far only been used hesitantly, especially in ground-based emergency services. Many critical or even life-threatening conditions or internal injuries can often be better diagnosed or ruled out using pPOCUS, which can enable faster and more suitable goal-directed treatment and hospital transport. This article critically discusses relevant data, clinical benefits, limitations and challenges to be overcome when using pPOCUS for the most important life-threatening situations and aims to call for intensifying training and the extensive use of pPOCUS.

Objective: Vestibular schwannomas (VS), benign tumors stemming from the eighth cranial nerve's Schwann cells, are associated with Merlin gene mutations, inflammation, and the tumor microenvironment (TME), influencing tumor initiation, maintenance, and potential neural dysfunction. Understanding TME composition holds promise for systemic therapeutic interventions, particularly for NF2-related schwannomatosis.

Methodology: A retrospective analysis of paraffin-embedded tissue from 40 patients (2013-2020), evenly divided by neurofibromatosis type 2 status, with further stratification based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) progression and hearing function.
