Objective: Based on our previous studies we analysed DNA and haemoglobin adducts, single-strand breaks in DNA, chromosomal aberrations and HPRT mutant frequencies in styrene-exposed workers, in relation to employment time, with respect to markers of individual susceptibility. In our study the risk assessment of genotoxic styrene in occupationally exposed humans is reviewed in the light of adaptation and/or population selection. Various styrene-induced DNA adducts (representing important integral measures of DNA damage) are discussed as potential powerful biomarkers of styrene exposure, with respect to DNA repair.

The intracellular microorganisms have developed sophisticated mechanisms to sense environmental conditions and respond to them by phenotypic alterations that ensure their adaptation, survival and proliferation inside the cell. They have learned also to utilise host cellular components to ensure own survival.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFIn mice, the Bcg/Nramp1 gene of the chromosome 1 has been implicated in natural resistance or susceptibility to infection with several intramacrophage microorganisms. Functional studies of Bcg/Nramp1 congenic macrophages have shown that this gene has many pleiotropic effects on macrophage activation and function. Although a specific role of Bcg/Nramp1 in the control of pleiotropic effects has not been defined yet, several observations propose unifying hypothesis for its complex role: metal ion transport is the primary function of the Bcg/Nramp1 gene, the availability of metal ions as cofactors for many proteins results from this primary function and, in turn, the effect on signal transduction results from ion-regulated expression of cellular proteins and their functions.
