Atraumatic osteonecrosis of the humeral head.

Objective: To define the epidemiology, clinical and radiographic presentation, treatment, and prognosis of atraumatic osteonecrosis of the humeral head.

Methods: Of the 1,056 patients managed for osteonecrosis of any joint between July 1, 1974, and December 1, 1996, 127 shoulders in 73 patients were treated for atraumatic osteonecrosis of the proximal humerus. Clinical and radiographic characterization of this patient cohort was performed.

Comparison of the vascular innervation of the rat cochlea and vestibular system.

In order to gain a better understanding of the neuronal and local control of inner ear blood flow, the vascular innervation to the rat cochlea and vestibular system was examined. Specimens were removed in toto beginning at the basilar artery extending to the anterior inferior cerebellar artery, labyrinthine artery, common cochlear artery, modiolar artery and anterior vestibular artery. When possible the vessels were dissected in continuity through the cribrose area.

Otolith function tests in patients with unilateral vestibular lesions.

This study was designed to assess the utility of otolith-ocular reflex testing in patients with complete unilateral peripheral vestibular deficits. Ten subjects were given a clinical vestibular test battery (ENG & vertical rotation) and research oriented tests of otolith function including dynamic posturography with head tilt and earth-horizontal axis rotation with otolith-visual interactions. Clinical tests confirmed the presence of a vestibular deficit and the side of the lesion.

Vestibular function test anomalies in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is distinguished by the new onset of debilitating fatigue that lasts at least 6 months, concomitant with other symptoms to be described later. Many CFS patients complain of disequilibrium, yet the exact type of the balance dysfunction and its function and its location (peripheral vs. central) have not been described.
