Article Synopsis
  • Cardiac surgery causes significant inflammation, and the use of corticosteroids is being examined as a way to reduce this inflammation and prevent complications post-surgery, but their safety and effectiveness remain uncertain.
  • The study aims to compare the effects of corticosteroids versus no treatment in adults undergoing cardiac surgery, focusing on mortality, myocardial and pulmonary complications, among other outcomes like atrial fibrillation and length of hospital stay.
  • The research involved comprehensive searches for randomised controlled trials and analyzed data using standard methods to assess various outcomes, with new studies added since the original 2011 review.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study analyzed the effects of severe patient-prosthesis mismatch (PPM) related to the Edwards Lifesciences Perimount bioprosthesis during aortic valve replacement on patient outcomes and survival rates over time.
  • - Using data from 5964 patients, researchers found that while 18.3% experienced severe PPM, it did not significantly increase in-hospital mortality or early complications, although those with severe PPM had longer hospital stays.
  • - Long-term survival showed some differences initially, but matched analysis revealed no significant differences in early health outcomes or overall survival between patients with and without severe PPM after 2 and 8 years.

Background: The purpose of this study was to assess the performance of more than 500 tissue-engineered bovine pericardial implants (CardioCel; Admedus, Toowong, Queensland, Australia) used for the repair of congenital heart defects.

Methods: Clinical data were collected for all patients who received a CardioCel implant at three centers (Brisbane, Australia; and Leicester and Bristol, United Kingdom). During this period, 501 CardioCel patches were implanted in 377 patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the early outcomes and long-term survival of mitral valve surgery performed by trainee residents versus experienced consultant surgeons to assess safety and efficacy.
  • A total of 1,742 patients were analyzed, with 1,622 surgeries by consultants and 120 by trainees, using propensity score matching to reduce bias.
  • Results showed no significant differences in complications or long-term survival rates between the two groups after matching, although the consultant group had higher in-hospital mortality before matching.
