A historical perspective of registered cases of malignant ocular tumors in Zimbabwe (1990 to 1999). Is HIV infection a factor?

Introduction: Anecdotal and published reports suggest that ocular tumours are on the increase in Zimbabwe.

Objectives: To determine the trends in incidence rates of common malignant ocular tumours registered with the Zimbabwe Cancer Registry during the last decade (1990 to 1999).

Design: Retrospective study.

Perforation of terminal ileum and appendix in typhoid enteritis: report of two cases.

Two cases of simultaneous typhoid perforation of terminal ileum and appendix are reported from Harare Central Hospital. These findings have not been reported before. Perforations were associated with schistosomiasis and HIV/AIDS.

Pleural tuberculosis in Harare, Zimbabwe: the relationship between human immunodeficiency virus, CD4 lymphocyte count, granuloma formation and disseminated disease.

Objective: To elucidate the relationship between HIV, CD4+ count and pleural TB.

Method: In a prospective study, 94 patients presenting at two large Harare hospitals with clinically suspected pleural TB were enrolled over a 10-month period. All underwent standardized evaluation, closed pleural aspiration and biopsy.
