Paediatric critical care units are designed for children at a vulnerable stage of development, yet the evidence base for practice and policy in paediatric critical care remains scarce. In this Health Policy, we present a roadmap providing strategic guidance for international paediatric critical care trials. Background: Progressive lung function decline, resulting in respiratory failure, is an important complication of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). The ability to predict the need for mechanical ventilation is important. We assessed longitudinal patterns of lung function prior to chronic respiratory failure in a national cohort of treatment-naïve children and adults with SMA, hypothesizing an accelerated decline prior to chronic respiratory failure.

Background: Hospitalized pediatric oncology patients are at risk of severe clinical deterioration. Yet Pediatric Early Warning System (PEWS) scores have not been prospectively validated in these patients. We aimed to determine the predictive performance of the modified BedsidePEWS score for unplanned pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) admission and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in this patient population.
