Perforation of congenitally deformed aortic valve resulting in aortic insufficiency. Report of case successfully treated by aortic valve replacement.

This 40-year-old male presented with the signs and the symptoms of acute aortic insufficiency and underwent aortic valve replacement. At surgery a deformed aortic valve with perforation was found. This represents a unique example of a congenitally deformed aortic valve complicated by acute perforation with resultant valvular incompetence.

Malignant small-cell epithelial tumor of the peritoneum coexpressing mesenchymal-type intermediate filaments.

A 28-year-old man with a large abdominal mass was found to have a tumor involving the peritoneum that had no other apparent primary origin. By light microscopy, the histologic pattern of the tumor was that of a small-cell epithelial neoplasm. Electron-microscopic examination demonstrated desmosomes and paranuclear aggregates of intermediate filaments.

Right ventricular metastatic melanoma 27 years after resection of the primary tumor.

This article is a case report of a 65-year-old white woman with a history of malignant melanoma, resected from her back in 1959. She presented 27 years later with right-sided heart failure and metastatic melanoma to her right ventricle. To the authors' knowledge, a large ventricular mass as the sole site of disease recurrence has not been described previously.

Healing of laser-induced defects of articular cartilage: preliminary studies.

The investigators have induced defects to the articular surfaces of knee joints in rabbits with the use of a CO2 laser. Subsequent healing of these defects have been studied and are described. This work has demonstrated healing with formation of fibrocartilage and hyaline cartilage in two of eight cases.
