Introduction: WHO's Integrated Care for Older People (ICOPE) proposes we measure the functional construct of intrinsic capacity (IC) to monitor and identify individuals with age-associated vulnerabilities. Assessments of IC may be useful to address the evolving, non-HV care needs of ageing people with HIV (PWH). However, to date, its utility within the context of HIV has not been assessed.

Article Synopsis
  • Traditional pectin extraction methods are harmful to the environment due to the use of strong acids, but this study introduces a novel, eco-friendly approach using Malonic Acid-based Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES).
  • The extraction of pectin from Artocarpus integer Peel was optimized through Response Surface Methodology, demonstrating effective yields and desirable properties like low pH and high solubility.
  • The optimal extraction conditions varied for two different DES, leading to significant results: ChCl-MA yielded a higher pectin content and better esterification than ChDHCit-MA, indicating their potential use in the food industry as gelling agents and preservatives.

Angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE2) downregulation represents a detrimental factor in people with a baseline ACE2 deficiency associated with older age, hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. Human coronaviruses, including HCoV-NL63, SARS-CoV-1, and SARS CoV-2 infect target cells via binding of viral spike (S) glycoprotein to the ACE2, resulting in ACE2 downregulation through yet unidentified mechanisms. This downregulation disrupts the enzymatic activity of ACE2, essential in protecting against organ injury by cleaving and disposing of Angiotensin-II (Ang II), leading to the formation of Ang 1-7, thereby exacerbating the accumulation of Ang II.

Inflammatory markers such as neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and eosinophil count are known prognostic indicators for the severity of Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS)/toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). This study explores the correlation of systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and NLR with Severity-of-Illness Score for Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (SCORTEN) and patient outcomes. A retrospective audit of 34 patients with SJS/TEN (25 SJS, 3 SJS/TEN overlap, 6 TEN) was conducted from 2018 to 2022.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study evaluated the effects of vitamin E compounds—α-tocopherol and tocotrienol-rich palm oil extract—on anxiety and depressive behaviors in mice with estrogen deficiency, finding that these compounds had positive effects on mood-related behaviors.
  • * The results indicated that both supplements reduced stress hormone levels and improved symptoms, suggesting they could be a promising new treatment option for menopause-related mood disorders, potentially influencing the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.
