Background: Early midlife individuals (ages 30-40) experience demographic shifts that may influence the remainder of adult life. Although new or persistent alcohol misuse is common during this period, early midlife is understudied in alcohol use literature. We examined the heritability of alcohol misuse; the associations between alcohol misuse and sociodemographic factors, physical health, and well-being; and whether these associations were robust in cotwin comparisons.

Background: Mechanical stress and pathological signaling trigger the activation of fibroblasts to myofibroblasts, which impacts extracellular matrix composition, disrupts normal wound healing, and can generate deleterious fibrosis. Myocardial fibrosis independently promotes cardiac arrhythmias, sudden cardiac arrest, and contributes to the severity of heart failure. Fibrosis can also alter cell-to-cell communication and increase myocardial stiffness which eventually may lead to lusitropic and inotropic cardiac dysfunction.

Objective: To study the efficacy of mitochondrial activator BGP-15 to preserve sperm quality and competence against cellular damage.

Design: Spermatozoa from mice or humans were treated in vitro with BGP-15 and sperm quality markers assessed. Spermatozoa from young (8-12 weeks old) or reproductively old (>14 months old) mice were treated with BGP-15 for 1h and assessed for sperm quality and pre-implantation embryo development after in vitro fertilization (IVF).
