We use data on intergenerational social mobility by neighborhood to examine how social and physical environments beyond concentrated poverty predict children's long-term well-being. First, we examine neighborhoods that are harsh on children's development: those characterized by high levels of violence, incarceration, and lead exposure. Second, we examine potential supportive or offsetting mechanisms that promote children's development, such as informal social control, cohesion among neighbors, and organizational participation.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study analyzed "absolute income mobility," which measures the percentage of children earning more than their parents, using various U.S. economic data sources.
  • - Findings showed a significant decline in mobility rates, dropping from around 90% for those born in 1940 to about 50% for those born in the 1980s.
  • - To improve these mobility rates, simply increasing GDP growth isn't enough; a more equitable distribution of that growth, similar to the 1940 cohort, could reverse over 70% of the decline in mobility rates.

West Nile fever caused fatal disease in humans, horses, and birds in the northeastern United States during 1999. We studied birds from two wildlife facilities in New York City, New York, that died or were euthanatized and were suspected to have West Nile virus infections. Using standard histologic and ultrastructural methods, virus isolation, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization and reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction, we identified West Nile virus as the cause of clinical disease, severe pathologic changes, and death in 27 birds representing eight orders and 14 species.
