Training the Next Generation of African Pathologists.

Quality patient care requires correct and timely evidence-based diagnoses. Pathology and laboratory medicine training varies significantly across the continent, but is inadequate to serve the needs of the population. This article summarizes the current state of pathology workforce and training in sub-Saharan Africa; discusses challenges to recruitment and retention; and outlines the necessary elements for training and sustaining a robust workforce in pathology and laboratory medicine.

Cherubism in sub-saharan Africa: a first case-report in a child.

Cherubism is rare disease and has been rarely reported in African pediatric population. We report here the case of a 10-year-old child who was referred to our hospital for bilateral jaws swelling. Physical examination revealed bilateral swelling symmetry of the face.

Direct evidence of extensive diversity of HIV-1 in Kinshasa by 1960.

Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) sequences that pre-date the recognition of AIDS are critical to defining the time of origin and the timescale of virus evolution. A viral sequence from 1959 (ZR59) is the oldest known HIV-1 infection. Other historically documented sequences, important calibration points to convert evolutionary distance into time, are lacking, however; ZR59 is the only one sampled before 1976.

[Histopathologic pattern of hyperplasia of bone marrow hematogones (medullar b lymphoid cell precursors) occurring after treatment of idiopathic myelofibrosis].

Hematogones are bone marrow precursors of B-lymphoid cells which are morphologically difficult to distinguish from blasts and/or from small lymphocytes. We report the case of a patient presenting idiopathic myelofibrosis with minimal myeloid blastic transformation causing severe pancytopenia, treated by allograft and showing in a bone marrow biopsy, a hyperplasia of B-lymphoid cells. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry identified these cells as hyperplasia of hematogones and not a transformation into lymphoblastic acute leukaemia.

[Early isosexual precocious pseudopuberty revealing a juvenile granulosa cell tumor in a 3-year-old Congolese girl].

We describe a juvenile granulosa cell tumor expressed by an early pseudopuberty occurring in a 3-year-old black child. Clinically, an endocrine syndrome was associated with a pelvic mass and ascites. Hyperoestrogenia and serum alphafetoprotein level were biologically detected.
