Germinal center B cells and antibody production in the bone marrow.

In secondary antibody (Ab) responses, Ag processing and presentation occur in secondary lymphoid organs but most serum Ab is produced by cells in the bone marrow. Plasma cells in the bone marrow are derived from B cells activated by Ag in secondary lymphoid organs. We hypothesized that germinal center (GC) B cells, which acquire Ag from follicular dendritic cells in draining lymph nodes during the first few days of the secondary response, migrate to the bone marrow to terminally differentiate and produce specific Ab.
