Practice Patterns of Spine Surgeons Regarding Osteoporosis: An International Survey.

Background: Osteoporosis (OP) represents a great challenge for the spine surgeon. Despite having effective pharmacological treatments for OP and surgical technical innovations, the awareness of spine surgeons regarding OP seems low. The purpose of this research was to assess practice patterns on the diagnosis and treatment of spine surgeons regarding OP.

[Promotion of health rights in Peru: an approach from the perspective of The Peruvian National Health Authority].

In Peru, The National Health Authority (SUSALUD) is granted the responsibility to promote, protect and defend the health rights of every citizen. However, in the Peruvian Health System (PHS) there exists an insufficient culture of health rights, a low level of knowledge of health rights by the population, and a limited degree of cooperation between users, providers and funders. In light of this limited popular participation in the health rights of the citizenry, it has been necessary for SUSALUD to pursue various activities in order to promote the exercise of health rights by Peruvians.

[Coinfection of Mycobacterium malmoense and Mycobacterium tuberculosis in a patient with acquired inmune deficiency syndrome].

A case is presented of coinfection with Mycobacterium malmoense and Mycobacterium tuberculosis in a Cuban patient with AIDS which produced respiratory and liver disease respectively. Cultures done from sputum samples showed the presence of a non-pigmented, slow growing mycobacterial strain belonging to Runyon group III and identified as Mycobacterium malmoense. From cultures of liver tissue removed laparoscopically, a strain was isolated and subsequently identified as Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
