Pentafluorophenyl copper(I)-biarylsulfoxide complexes, existing as [Cu(CF)]L, both in solution and in the solid state, were prepared and thoroughly characterized. Subsequently, the photochemistry of the complexes was explored, showing inherent photoreactivity of the biarylsulfoxide moiety within the coordination sphere of the copper. Photoinduced cross-coupling reactions between the anthryl moiety of bis-anthracenylsulfoxide and pentafluorobenzene, and synthesis of CuO (cuprite), were demonstrated.

The success of messenger (m)RNA-based vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 during the COVID-19 pandemic has led to rapid growth and innovation in the field of mRNA-based therapeutics. However, mRNA production, whether in small amounts for research or large-scale GMP-grade for biopharmaceutics, is still based on the Transcription (IVT) reaction developed in the early 1980s. The IVT reaction exploits phage RNA polymerase to catalyze the formation of an engineered mRNA that depends on a linearized DNA template, nucleotide building blocks, as well as pH, temperature, and reaction time.

Background: The pharmacokinetics of oral favipiravir and the relationships of plasma concentrations to antiviral effects are incompletely studied in influenza.

Methods: Serial plasma samples were collected from adults with uncomplicated influenza who were randomized to favipiravir (1800 mg twice a day on day 1, 800 mg twice a day on days 2 to 5; n = 827) or placebo (n = 419) in 2 phase 3 trials. Post hoc analyses assessed the frequency of reaching an average minimum concentration (Cmin) ≥20 µg/mL, its association with antiviral efficacy, and factors associated with reduced favipiravir exposure.

Novel norbornene-based imine-stabilized silylium ions 2 have been synthesized the simple reaction of sulfide-stabilized silylium ion 1 with carbonyl derivatives. Those silylium ions were fully characterized in solution and in the solid state by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis as well as DFT calculations. Unlike the previously reported phosphine-stabilized silylium ion VI, behaving as a Lewis pair, calculations show that 2 have a strong Lewis acid character.

Background: We conducted double-blind, placebo-controlled trials assessing the efficacy and tolerability of favipiravir in acute influenza.

Methods: Otherwise healthy adults with influenza-like symptoms and fever of ≤48 hours were randomized to favipiravir (1800 mg twice daily [BID] on day 1, 800 mg BID on days 2-5) or placebo tablets (1:1 in US316; 3:1 in US317). The primary efficacy endpoint was the time to illness alleviation when 6 influenza symptoms were self-rated as absent or mild and fever was absent in the intention-to-treat, influenza-infected participants.
