Article Synopsis
  • Compartment syndrome can arise from serious burns, particularly high voltage electrical burns, leading to tissue damage and potential necrosis without prompt treatment, which is emergency surgical decompression.
  • Diagnosing compartment syndrome is challenging due to bulky dressings on the burned patient, prompting the use of a pressure transducer commonly found in arterial catheters to measure muscle compartment pressures accurately.
  • The pressure measurement process is quick and straightforward, allowing for timely diagnosis and assessment of compartment syndrome, with an established threshold pressure of 35 mmHg to guide treatment decisions.
