Surviving the 2021 heat dome with schizophrenia: A qualitative, interview-based unpacking of risks and vulnerabilities.

This study explores the multifaceted challenges experienced by individuals with schizophrenia during extreme heat, highlighting the interplay between individual factors, social dynamics, and environmental influences. Despite making up only 1% of the Canadian population, individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia comprised 16% (n = 97) of the deaths during the 2021 heat dome in Western Canada. However, to date, there exists scant qualitative research that explore the direct experiences and the intricacies of intersecting factors faced by individuals with schizophrenia during extreme heat events.

Imaging of hypoglossal palsy: a pictorial synopsis.

Palsy of the hypoglossal nerve, the 12 cranial nerve, is rare and presents with specific clinical features depending on the anatomical location of the underlying pathology. As such, knowledge of clinical presentation and detailed anatomy of the nerve is vital to aid in localisation and identification of the pathology. This pictorial review details the anatomy of the nerve, including innervation, segments, and branches, with particular reference to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Herpesviruses, including the oncogenic Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), must bypass host DNA sensing mechanisms to establish infection. The first viral latency protein expressed, EBNA-LP, is essential for transformation of naïve B cells, yet its role in evading host defenses remains unclear. Using single-cell RNA sequencing of EBNA-LP-Knockout (LPKO)-infected B cells, we reveal an antiviral response landscape implicating the 'speckled proteins' as key restriction factors countered by EBNA-LP.

Current management of uncomplicated type B aortic dissection.

Aortic dissection is the most common thoracic aortic emergency and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Initial complications are dependent on reduction of sheer stress against the aortic wall to protect against rupture and minimize progression of the aortic wall injury. In patients with dissection starting at or distal to the left subclavian artery (Stanford type B), initial management includes strict blood pressure and heart rate control with monitoring for any complications such as malperfusion, rupture or hemodynamic instability.
