The morphology of the distal femur varies. Whether or not the variability falls strictly along gender lines, a better fit to the distal femur can be obtained without intraoperative compromises by making available both a narrow and a wider medial-lateral/anterior-posterior aspect ratio. In our 1-year outcomes of the first 360 patients who received the Zimmer Gender Solutions Natural-Knee Flex System, mean flexion was 131 degrees (10 degrees better than mean flexion with the earlier Natural-Knee I and II systems), and the lateral release rate decreased to 2%.

Twenty-six patients with late infected total knee arthroplasties were treated by debridement and removal of components and all cement, preserving collateral ligaments. At time of debridement, an articulating spacer was fashioned to allow partial weightbearing and knee range of motion (ROM) during rehabilitation. This spacer was implanted using antibiotic-impregnated bone cement.

During the first operation of a staged bilateral total knee arthroplasty, seven patients consented to have paired porous-coated devices implanted into their opposite medial femoral condyle. One device of each pair had autologous bone chips applied to the porous-coating, and the other was not grafted and was a control.
