During metastasis, circulating tumor cells (CTCs) can travel in the bloodstream as individual cells or clusters, associated with fibrin and platelets. Clusters have a higher metastatic potential due to their increased ability to withstand shear stress and arrest in small vessels. Moreover, CTC-platelet interaction protects CTCs from shear stress and immune detection.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates long-term outcomes for patients with very-low rectal cancer who underwent either abdominoperineal resection (APR) or low anterior resection (LAR), focusing on disease-free survival and other key factors.
  • - Analysis of data from the United States Rectal Cancer Consortium included 431 patients, revealing no significant differences in disease-free survival, overall survival, complications, or hospital stay length between the two surgical methods.
  • - The findings suggest that both APR and LAR are valid treatment options for very-low rectal cancer without sphincter involvement, as neither approach showed a clear advantage in patient outcomes.

This paper contributes to the literature on how diversity impacts groups by exploring how communication mediates the ability of diverse individuals to work together. To do so we incorporate a communication channel into a representative model of problem-solving by teams of diverse agents that provides the foundations for one of the most widely cited analytical results in the literature on diversity and team performance: the "Diversity Trumps Ability Theorem". We extend the model to account for the fact that communication between agents is a necessary feature of team problem-solving, and we introduce the possibility that this communication occurs with error, and that this error might sometimes be correlated with how different agents are from one another.
