The development of new antibiotics with unique mechanisms of action is paramount to combating the growing threat of antibiotic resistance. Recently, based on inspiration from natural products, an asymmetrical polyacetylene core structure was examined for its bioactivity and found to have differential specificity for different bacterial species based on the substituents around the conjugated alkyne. This research further probes the structural requirements for bioactivity through a systematic synthesis and investigation of new compounds with variable carbon chain length, alkynyl subunits, and alcohol substitution.

Antibiotic resistance is a growing problem facing global societies today. Many new antibiotics are derivatized versions of already existing antibiotics, which allows for antibiotic resistance to arise. To combat this issue, new antibiotics with different core structures need to be elucidated.

Purpose: One of the most common adverse events after treatment of severe odontogenic infections is the need for a second procedure. The identification of risk factors for reoperation could help surgeons predict the need for reoperation or even tailor treatment to avoid this complication altogether. The purpose of this study was to identify risk factors associated with reoperation in patients hospitalized with odontogenic infections.

Tetracyclic 6-naphtho[2,1-]chromenes are expeditiously synthesized through a BF·OEt-mediated, three-step cascade reaction, creating new central pyran and aromatic rings. The cascade involves the addition of phenol-derived alkynyl substrates to BF-activated aldehydes followed by alkyne-Prins cyclization, Friedel-Crafts reaction, and final elimination. Aliphatic and electron-deficient aromatic aldehydes afford the products in 50-74% isolated yields, but benzaldehyde and tolualdehyde resulted in lower yields.
