Background: Minimizing initial neonatal blood draws and their associated pain is important. The placenta has ample fetal blood that is otherwise discarded; obtaining admission laboratory evaluations from fetal umbilical venous blood (FUVB) may provide a suitable alternative.

Objective: We hypothesized that obtaining an aerobic bacterial blood culture (BCX) and a complete blood count with manual differential (CBC/diff) from FUVB is feasible and yields results comparable to those obtained directly from the neonate.

Objective: This study aimed to detect novel mesenchymal stem cell peptides/biomarkers of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in the tracheal aspirate fluid (TAF) of preterm infants.

Study Design: Participants included infants less than 32 weeks' gestational age or birth weight under 1500 grams who required endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation within first 24 hours of life. TAF sample collection was performed at the time of the first clinically indicated routine suctioning.

Summary: DNA-based methods to detect and quantify taxon composition in biological materials are often based on species-specific polymerase chain reaction, limited to detecting species targeted by the assay. Next-generation sequencing overcomes this drawback by untargeted shotgun sequencing of whole metagenomes at affordable cost. Here we present AFS, a software pipeline for quantification of species composition in food.

A prospective, cross-sectional, observational study in preterm and term infants was performed to compare multimodal measurements of body composition, namely, limb ultrasound, bone quantitative ultrasound, and dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). One hundred and two preterm and term infants appropriate for gestational age were enrolled from the newborn nursery and neonatal intensive care unit. Infants were included when they were medically stable, in an open crib, on full enteral feeds and within 1 week of anticipated discharge.

Little is understood about the optimal balance between IGF-I and antagonistic inflammatory mediators, such as IL-6, in growing preterm infants. Using a prospective cohort study, we investigated the relationship between postnatal growth of preterm infants and key growth and inflammatory mediators. We studied 51 stable, growing preterm infants (mean gestational age: 27.
