The National Right to Life Committee: its founding, its history, and the emergence of the pro-life movement prior to Roe v. Wade.

During the mid-1960s a few Catholic journals and individuals advised that a more active role should be taken in defeating abortion reform. In 1967 the National Conference of Catholic Bishops selected James Thomas McHugh, administrator of the United States Catholic Conference’s Family Life Bureau, to guide its National Right to Life Committee (NRLC). Several pro-life organizations, including Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life, emerged and affiliated with the NRLC national office.

Event-related brain potentials during an extended visual recognition memory task depict delayed development of cerebral inhibitory processes among 6-month-old infants with Down syndrome.

Development of cerebral inhibitory processes among individuals with Down syndrome (DS) may be delayed at an early age. In support of this hypothesis, sensory-evoked potentials (EPs) and event-related brain potentials (ERPs) have previously delineated altered habituation to stimuli among infants with DS. The purpose of the current study was to provide extended experience with visual stimuli among 6-month-old infants with and without DS (nDS) to determine if altered ERP and behavioral response decrements would be evident even after repeated presentations of stimuli.

Event-related potentials and information processing in infants with and without Down syndrome.

Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded from 6-month-old infants with and without Down syndrome presented with a visual recognition memory task. The ERP morphology was the same for both groups. The chronometry of information processing by infants with Down syndrome was similar to or faster than that of the infants without Down syndrome, depending on ERP component.

Event-related brain potentials were recorded from 4-7-week-old infants viewing a visual oddball task. During the task the duration of the infant's visual fixations of the stimuli was recorded. The latency of a frontally predominant negative component (Nc) and magnitude of an early slow wave (NSW) changed as a function of stimulus experience, thereby indicating a sensitivity to the infant's attention, stimulus discrimination and, perhaps, recognition memory.
