NUT carcinoma (NC) is an extremely rare, aggressive malignancy characterized by chromosomal rearrangements in the (nuclear protein in testis) gene. It usually affects younger patients with a median age of diagnosis at 23 years old. The mainstay of treatment consists of combination chemotherapy, surgical resection, and high dose radiation.

A clinical isolate, R131, was isolated from the peritoneal swab of a patient who suffered from ruptured appendicitis with abscess and gangrene in Hong Kong in 2018. Cells are facultatively anaerobic, non-motile, Gram-positive coccobacilli. Colonies were small, grey, semi-translucent, low convex and alpha-haemolytic.

Background: Calcific aortic valve disease is the pathological remodeling of valve leaflets. The initial steps in valve leaflet osteogenic reprogramming are not fully understood. As TERT (telomerase reverse transcriptase) overexpression primes mesenchymal stem cells to differentiate into osteoblasts, we investigated whether TERT contributes to the osteogenic reprogramming of valve interstitial cells.
