Despite the increasing prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease in the population and the increasing likelihood that HIV-positive (HIV+) patients may have an extraction, little is known about the risk of postoperative complications in this group. The goal of this investigation was to assess the risk of postoperative complications in HIV+ patients after tooth extraction. The use of collagen tube containers with implants of an autogenous bone and particulate hydroxylapatite composite is reported. The tubes were used to shape the mixture and to facilitate its implantation in cases of severe mandibular resorption. Following a minimum of 60 months after implant placement and a minimum of 48 months of denture wear, the implant and overall prosthodontic success were rated favorably by the patient and the prostodontist.

Many edentulous patients who previously have undergone vestibuloplasty with split-thickness skin grafting to improve denture stability and function seek additional help with dental implants. Problems encountered following the placement of four endosseous root-form dental implants in one such patient are presented. The anatomic and surgical considerations as well as methods available to circumvent these problems are discussed.

The prevalence of symptoms associated with "combination syndrome" were documented in 150 maxillary complete denture wearers. The five alveolar ridge changes that are most consequential to denture wearing and most difficult to correct surgically were found in 7% of the population studied. However, these changes were found in 24% of patients who have natural mandibular anterior teeth opposing complete maxillary dentures.
