Social factors and the role of environment which influence to the aging process on the cohort of the elderly people on European North of Russia have been discussed. The indicators of aging of elderly people stated in the different living conditions with defining risk factors have been analyzed. The predominance of the individuals with high rates of aging in the men's cohort living in the rural areas has been considered.

The contemporary approaches to the conception of healthy aging are discussed. The insufficient propaganda of healthy style of life of elderly population results in non-satisfaction of own health in old age; lack of information about opportunities to strengthen the health in the system of social services managing is also a problem. Weak skills and motivation of elder generation for taking care of the own health are registered.

Social security of elderly people is discussed at different levels of the realization of the geronto-social policy in the Barents Euro-Arctic Region within the context of the Madrid Plan of Actions on Aging. There have been comparatively analyzed demographic indicators that show age structures of the regions which are parts of the Barents Euro-Arctic Region. There have been defined regional differences and trends of improvement of geronto-social policy for providing security of life activity of elderly people in the Russian part of the Barents Euro-Arctic Region.

Scientific and theoretical approaches to gerontosocial work, perspective trends of its development in the Russian society: socio-cultural model, resource based gerontosocial work, two-level training system for specialists on gerontology, gerontological education have been discussed. The goals and levels of education in gerontology in the modern society have been considered. The introduction of the socio-cultural model into the practical work with the elderly people in accord with the Madrid Action Plan on Ageing has been proved.

The definition of gerontosocial work adopted in the majority of the European countries in the context of the Russian culture and priority trends of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing has been discussed. In the article the interaction and differences between terms being used in social work with the elderly people in Russia have been showed; tasks and peculiarities of gerontosocial work have been defined. Peculiarities of interaction between personnel and elderly patients have been studied; the increasing requirements to the professionalism of gerontosocial workers have been proved.
