Symptom networks in patients with substance use disorders.

Background: Reciprocity between symptoms of psychiatric disorders is increasingly recognized to contribute to their chronicity. In substance use disorders (SUD) little is known on reciprocal interactions between symptoms. We applied network analyses to study these interactions.

Leapfrogging with technology: introduction of a monitoring platform to support a large-scale Ebola vaccination program in Rwanda.

Continued outbreaks of Ebola virus disease, including recent outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), highlight the need for effective vaccine programs to combat future outbreaks. Given the population flow between DRC and Rwanda, the Rwanda Ministry of Health initiated a preventive vaccination campaign supported by a vaccination monitoring platform (VMP). The campaign aimed to vaccinate approximately 200,000 people from Rwanda's Rubavu and Rusizi districts with the two-dose vaccine regimen Ad26.

Hypothesis and Theory: A Pathophysiological Concept of Stroke-Induced Acute Phase Response and Increased Intestinal Permeability Leading to Secondary Brain Damage.

Gut integrity impairment leading to increased intestinal permeability (IP) is hypothesized to be a trigger of critically illness. Approximately 15-20% of human ischemic stroke (IS) victims require intensive care, including patients with impaired level of consciousness or a high risk for developing life-threatening cerebral edema. Local and systemic inflammatory reactions are a major component of the IS pathophysiology and can significantly aggravate brain tissue damage.

Overcoming the challenges of iris scanning to identify minors (1-4 years) in the real-world setting.

Objective: Biometric identification techniques for pediatric use are limited. This investigation studied iris scanning in minors aged 1-4 in two exploratory studies in Belgium (n = 197) and Sierra Leone (n = 230), and in a subsequent clinical study in Sierra Leone (n = 635). Images of participants' irises were captured using a camera, while a survey assessed the ease of use with children.

Anti-inflammatory and Oto-Protective Effect of the Small Heat Shock Protein Alpha B-Crystallin (HspB5) in Experimental Pneumococcal Meningitis.

Sensorineural hearing loss is the most common long-term deficit after pneumococcal meningitis (PM), occurring in up to 30% of surviving patients. The infection and the following overshooting inflammatory host response damage the vulnerable sensory cells of the inner ear, resulting in loss of hair cells and spiral ganglion neurons, ultimately leading to elevated hearing thresholds. Here, we tested the oto-protective properties of the small heat shock protein alpha B-crystallin (HspB5) with previously reported anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic and neuroprotective functions, in an experimental model of PM-induced hearing loss.
