Xenon has features that make it an ideal general anesthetic agent; cost and scarcity mitigate xenon's widespread use in the operating room. Discovery of xenon's cytoprotective properties resulted in its application to thwart ongoing acute neurologic injury, an unmet clinical need. The discovery that xenon's neuroprotective effect interacts synergistically with targeted temperature management (TTM) led to its investigation in clinical settings, including in the management of the postcardiac arrest syndrome, in which TTM is indicated.

We determined the association of hypercoiling (more than 1 coil per 5 cm) and thinning with consecutive constriction of the umbilical vessels (thin cord syndrome; TCS) and intrauterine fetal death (IUFD). Three hundred and three cases of consecutive fetal autopsies over a 5-year period, including spontaneous and induced abortions of the 2nd trimester of pregnancy, were examined using a standardized protocol.

RXRalpha-mediated gene expression involved in amino acid metabolism was examined using the NIA Mouse 15K cDNA microarray containing 15,000 different expressed sequence tags. Seven amino acid metabolic genes, three of which encode enzymes involved in phase II detoxification process, were identified as RXRalpha target genes in mouse liver.

To analyze the impact of retinoid X receptor alpha (RXRalpha) on ALD, alcohol-induced hepatotoxicity was studied using mice fed ethanol intragastrically for 25 days. Alcohol-induced microvesicular fat around the central vein and drug-induced morphological changes (loss of rough endoplasmic reticulum, pinkish cytoplasm, and enlarged hepatocyte) in the pericentral area were observed in the liver of wild-type mice.
