Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by infection with the enveloped RNA betacoronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, led to a global pandemic involving over 7 million deaths. Macrophage inflammatory responses impact COVID-19 severity; however, it is unclear whether macrophages are infected by SARS-CoV-2. We sought to identify mechanisms regulating macrophage expression of ACE2, the primary receptor for SARS-CoV-2, and to determine if macrophages are susceptible to productive infection.

Biofilms are ubiquitous surface-associated bacterial communities embedded in an extracellular matrix. It is commonly assumed that biofilm cells are glued together by the matrix; however, how the specific biochemistry of matrix components affects the cell-matrix interactions and how these interactions vary during biofilm growth remain unclear. Here, we investigate cell-matrix interactions in Vibrio cholerae, the causative agent of cholera.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on Arginase 1 (ARG1) deficiency, which leads to high levels of arginine in the blood and neurological issues, highlighting the need for better variant classification.
  • Researchers analyzed both published and unpublished gene variants related to ARG1 deficiency using established genetic guidelines and AI tools for accurate classification.
  • Results revealed that a significant number of variants are classified as uncertain in terms of their pathogenicity, emphasizing the need for more research to understand their impact and accurately estimate the global prevalence of ARG1 deficiency.
