Parvovirus B19 (B19V) presents a significant concern in the context of blood transfusion safety, given its potential for transmission through contaminated blood products, and the increased viral circulation recently reported across Europe. This study examines the recent epidemiological trends of B19V in Italy, where a notable increase in B19V-positive plasma units was observed during early 2024. While routine NAT testing for B19V in individual blood donations is not currently justified, the existing screening protocols for plasma intended for industrial fractionation are crucial to ensure the safety of plasma-derived medicinal products.

Background: Expected and unexpected donor-derived infections (DDI) are a rare event in solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients but are potentially associated with significant morbidity and mortality. To assure the microbial safety of transplantation, both national guidelines and the current, regional, and local epidemiology of infectious diseases must be considered.

Methods: In the present paper the strategies adopted by the Italian National Center for Transplantation (CNT) since 2003 and their evolution to guarantee the safety of organ transplantation are reported.

Background: is a canopy-forming brown macroalga that thrives in the intertidal and subtidal habitats of the warm-temperate Mediterranean Sea, which is particularly exposed to environmental changes due to its peculiar geographical location and exposure to both global and local stressors. Testing whether this species is featured by specific functional, eco-physiological and biochemical traits allowing an efficient use of habitat resources and adaptation to environmental stress, and whether this potential might change with population growth, is essential for predicting the performance of the algae under different environmental abiotic variables (, temperature, nutrient availability, light) and biotic interactions (such as grazing).

Methods: Young (juveniles) and adult thalli of were sampled in the winter season from the Venice Lagoon, Italy, featured by high environmental changes (temperature, salinity) and analyzed for thallus dry matter content (TDMC), photosynthetic activity, photosynthetic pigment and protein content, and antioxidant capacity to assess if thallus age may be considered a significant driver in determining the ecological responses of this species to environmental changes.
