Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated how severe knee osteoarthritis (KOA) affects surgical outcomes and spinal alignment in elderly patients with degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis (DLS) undergoing lumbar fusion.
  • It included 110 patients over 65 years, categorized based on KOA severity, and evaluated surgical results using the Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) scoring and spinopelvic alignment parameters.
  • Findings revealed that while the severe-OA group faced more challenges post-surgery, such as lower activity levels and greater risk for adjacent-segment disease (ASD), there were no significant differences in overall recovery rate compared to mild or moderate KOA groups.

Background Data: Correlation between lumbar degenerative disease and degenerative disorders of the knee joint have often been reported, however, detailed research concerning lumbar degenerative spondylolisthesis (DS) who complicates osteoarthritis of the knee (KOA) are scarce.

Methods: A total of 184 consecutive surgically treated DS patients were identified, and divided into two groups: DS patients who complicate KOA (KOA group) and DS patients without KOA (non-KOA group). DS was defined as grade 1 or more, according to Meyerding's classification, and KOA was defined as grade 3 or more according to Kellgren-Lawrence classification.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical and radiological features of osteoporotic burst fractures affecting levels below the second lumbar (middle-low lumbar) vertebrae, and to clarify the appropriate surgical procedure to avoid postoperative complications. Thirty-eight consecutive patients (nine male, 29 female; mean age: 74.8 years; range: 60-86 years) with burst fractures affecting the middle-low lumbar vertebrae who underwent posterior-instrumented fusion were included.
