The analysis of the electrical activity (trains of spikes, volleys) of single neurons is proposed in form of a pattern function. From the pattern function and its variance it is possible to obtain full statistical description of volleys including the density distribution of spikes in the volley. An algorithm for finding the pattern function and the estimate of variance from a set of experimentally obtained volleys is given.

The computer analysis of the dynamics of volleys is proposed by means of the so-called pattern function (template), which describes the change of time-intervals between spikes inside volleys. The validation of the proposed method is based on the analysis of artificially generated volleys.

A model of the neural control of quiet breathing in an anaesthetised and tracheostomised laboratory animal is presented. The loop consisting of the brain generator with its respiratory "master function", the phrenic command, the aerodynamics of the lungs and the volume information carried by the vagus nerves is described in mathematical terms. Computer model experiments are presented and compared with corresponding physiological situations.

An attempt to describe mathematically the dynamic behavior of a slowly adapting pulmonary stretch receptor is presented. The elaborated formula makes it possible to assess both the dynamics of the receptor firing and the phenomenon of adaptation.
