Analyzing video footage of falls in older adults has emerged as an alternative to traditional lab studies. However, this approach is limited by the labor-intensive process of manually labeling body parts. To address this limitation, we aimed to validate the use of the AI-based pose estimation algorithm (OpenPose) in assessing the hip impact velocity and acceleration of video-captured falls.

The electromagnetic form factors of the proton and neutron encode information on the spatial structure of their charge and magnetization distributions. While measurements of the proton are relatively straightforward, the lack of a free neutron target makes measurements of the neutron's electromagnetic structure more challenging and more sensitive to experimental or model-dependent uncertainties. Various experiments have attempted to extract the neutron form factors from scattering from the neutron in deuterium, with different techniques providing different, and sometimes large, systematic uncertainties.

A thyroidea ima artery variation providing collateral circulation to the mediastinum.

The thyroidea ima artery (TIA) is a highly variable arterial deviation of the blood supply to the thyroid gland with critical implications for surgical neck procedures such as tracheostomy. Though relatively common in the population at large (~ 4%), most TIA variations are related to the origin of the artery and whether it emerges from the common sites of the brachiocephalic trunk, aortic arch, and right common carotid artery, or another more unique vessel-as opposed to its dispersion pattern. TIA variants generally supply the thyroid gland, occasionally co-occurring with absent thyroid arteries.

Ralstonia solanacearum pandemic lineage strain UW551 overcomes inhibitory xylem chemistry to break tomato bacterial wilt resistance.

Plant-pathogenic Ralstonia strains cause bacterial wilt disease by colonizing xylem vessels of many crops, including tomato. Host resistance is the best control for bacterial wilt, but resistance mechanisms of the widely used Hawaii 7996 tomato breeding line (H7996) are unknown. Using growth in ex vivo xylem sap as a proxy for host xylem, we found that Ralstonia strain GMI1000 grows in sap from both healthy plants and Ralstonia-infected susceptible plants.

Mobile Phone Use by People with Mild to Moderate Dementia: Uncovering Challenges and Identifying Opportunities: Mobile Phone Use by People with Mild to Moderate Dementia.

With the rising usage of mobile phones by people with mild dementia, and the documented barriers to technology use that exist for people with dementia, there is an open opportunity to study the specifics of mobile phone use by people with dementia. In this work we provide a first step towards filling this gap through an interview study with fourteen people with mild to moderate dementia. Our analysis yields insights into mobile phone use by people with mild to moderate dementia, challenges they experience with mobile phone use, and their ideas to address these challenges.
