Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia associated with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome in pregnancy: a report of three maternal deaths.

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) has become a major public health problem in the United States. Current projections, based on seroepidemiologic data, suggest a large increase in the number of cases over the next several years. Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia is the most common opportunistic infection associated with AIDS and an increase in the frequency of that illness also can be anticipated.

Vascular invasion in Stage I carcinoma of the cervix.

Vascular invasion was identified as an important prognostic variable for all lesion sizes in 138 patients with Stage I cervical carcinoma. A matched pairs analysis, controlling for lesion size and extracervical spread, showed that vascular invasion was significantly associated with poor outcome. Regression analysis also indicated that vascular invasion contributed prognostic information beyond that available from lesion size and extracervical spread.
