Sternotomy is rarely performed for veterinary therapeutic or recovery models in quadrupeds because of difficulties with breathing, ambulation, and pain control. Central cannulation for cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is infrequent and typically performed through full thoracotomies. Experienced clinical surgeons and perfusionists should provide guidance for new therapeutic interventions and translational research.

Inhalable nitric oxide (iNO) is a lifesaving, FDA-approved drug to improve oxygenation in persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn. iNO also has many other applications in lung diseases owing to its vasodilatory and antimicrobial effects. However, its wider therapeutic application is often prohibited by the high cost and logistical barriers of traditional NO/N gas tanks.

Article Synopsis
  • The text discusses the occurrence of dual circulation during venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO), where blood from the body and an artificial heart/lung system mix, resulting in differing oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in two separate circulations.
  • This phenomenon arises when native blood flow from the heart meets retrograde blood flow from the artificial system, creating distinct physiological environments on either side of the mixing point.
  • The authors aim to clarify the terminology surrounding this issue to improve communication and clinical management for patients undergoing VA-ECMO treatment.

Electronic structure methods built around double-electron excitations have a rich history in quantum chemistry. However, it seems to be the case that such methods are only suitable in particular situations and are not naturally equipped to simultaneously handle the variety of electron correlations that might be present in chemical systems. To this end, the current work seeks a computationally efficient, low-rank, "ultimate" coupled cluster method based exclusively on T2 and its products that can effectively emulate more "complete" methods that explicitly consider higher-rank, T2m, operators.

Article Synopsis
  • Extracorporeal Carbon Dioxide Removal (ECCOR) systems help patients with severe respiratory failure, but their effectiveness is limited due to size and patient metabolic changes.
  • A new prototype of a wearable ECCOR is presented that can adjust automatically to a patient's metabolic needs using exhaust gas CO levels as an indicator.
  • Initial tests show this system can quickly adapt to changing conditions, paving the way for devices that support physical therapy and offer more independence to patients.
