To elucidate the frequency of infections with pathogenic respiratory bacteriae during an inter-epidemic period a multiplex PCR assay was used to screen nasopharyngeal smears for the presence of DNA specific for Bordetella pertussis, Bordetella parapertussis, Chlamydophila pneumoniae and Mycoplasma pneumoniae. 187 samples from children aged 2-14 y were analysed with this method in addition to classical bacteriology and compared to results obtained with commercially available PCR kits for each single parameter. A commercially available automated device (MagNA Pure LC) was adapted for nucleic acid extraction of urogenital specimen for subsequent PCR detection of Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae in a clinical laboratory. Results were compared to the standard manual extraction procedure and showed excellent correlation, with even slightly increased sensitivity.

Expression of human leucocyte antigen (HLA) Class I molecules is essential for the recognition of malignant melanoma (MM) cells by CD8(+) T lymphocytes. A complete or partial loss of HLA Class I molecules is a potent strategy for MM cells to escape from immunosurveillance.
