Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the sputum microbiota of community-acquired pneumonia patients with COPD and asthma in Turkey, considering differences in their clinical presentation and microbiological findings.
  • It included 246 hospitalized patients, revealing that a significant portion had COPD (52.9%) or asthma (14.2%), with Pseudomonas aeruginosa being the most commonly identified pathogen.
  • Results indicated that CAP patients with COPD had more severe disease presentations and specific treatment needs compared to those with asthma, highlighting the importance of tailored management for pneumonia patients.

The risk of hematoma formation after rhytidectomy is gender associated and can lead to postoperative complications. The literature to help explain and elucidate the mechanism behind this gender-associated risk is poorly developed and requires further investigation. The objective of this study was to compare facial skin micro-vessel density of female and male-to-female (MTF) transgender patients undergoing rhytidectomy to better understand the mechanism of gender-correlated hematoma risk factors.

Background: Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), the primary omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil, have been shown to reduce cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk.

Objective: This study aimed to examine the independent effects of EPA and DHA on lipid and apolipoprotein levels, as well as on inflammatory biomarkers of CVD risk, using doses often used in the general population.

Design: A blinded, randomized 6-week trial was performed in 121 healthy, normolipidemic subjects who received olive oil placebo 6g/d, EPA 600mg/d, EPA 1800mg/d, or DHA 600mg/d.

A relatively new consideration in proton therapy planning is the requirement that the mix of patients treated from different categories satisfy desired mix percentages. Deviations from these percentages and their impacts on operational capabilities are of particular interest to healthcare planners. In this study, we investigate intelligent ways of admitting patients to a proton therapy facility that maximize the total expected number of treatment sessions (fractions) delivered to patients in a planning period with stochastic patient arrivals and penalize the deviation from the patient mix restrictions.

Multiple Lesions in the Upper Jaw.

West Indian Med J

December 2014

Buccal exostoses are benign, broad-based surface masses of the outer or facial aspect of the upper jaw (maxilla) or, less commonly, the lower jaw (mandible). They begin to develop in early adulthood and may very slowly enlarge over years. We report here an adult man with multiple masses of the maxilla above the teeth.
