There is limited information on access and outcomes of patients living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (PLWH) who have undergone pancreas transplantation. We conducted a retrospective cohort study analyzing data from the United Network for Organ Sharing from July 1, 2001, to June 30, 2021. Recipients of pancreas transplant were stratified by HIV serostatus.

Effect of mitochondrial oxidative stress on regulatory T cell manufacturing for clinical application in transplantation: Results from a pilot study.

The manufacturing process of regulatory T (Treg) cells for clinical application begins with the positive selection of CD25 cells using superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticle (SPION)-conjugated anti-CD25 antibodies (spCD25) and immunomagnetic cell separation technology. Our findings revealed that the interaction of spCD25 with its cell target induced the internalization of the complex spCD25-interleukin-2 receptor. Accumulation of intracellular spCD25 triggered oxidative stress, causing delayed Treg expansion and temporary reduction in suppressor activity.

Utilization of Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound in Diagnosis of Focal Liver Lesions.

: Focal liver lesions (FLL) are one of the most common indications for hepatology and hepatobiliary surgery consultation. In this retrospective study, we aim to assess if contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) can address diagnostic dilemmas in the evaluation of indeterminate liver lesions by identifying characteristics of indeterminate FLL on CEUS and correlating these with cross-sectional imaging and pathology findings. : We retrospectively reviewed all patients who underwent CEUS evaluation for liver lesions over a 28-month period (Oct 2020 to Jan 2023) at the University of Kentucky.

Racial disparities in access to liver transplantation in patients with early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma.

Background: Orthotopic liver transplantation is the recommended treatment option for patients with early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma and concomitant cirrhosis. Waitlist candidacy can be affected by social determinants of health that vary across races and ethnicities. Our study sought to evaluate whether racial/ethnic disparities exist in access to orthotopic liver transplantation in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma.

Perioperative outcomes after hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma among patients with cirrhosis, fatty liver disease, and clinically normal livers.

Introduction: Despite superior outcomes with liver transplantation, cirrhotic patients with HCC may turn to other forms of definitive treatment. To understand perioperative outcomes, we examined perioperative mortality and major morbidity after hepatectomy for HCC among cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic patients.
