A comparison between the principal stress direction and collagen fiber orientation in coronary atherosclerotic plaque fibrous caps.

The rupture of coronary atherosclerotic plaque fibrous caps has been associated with acute myocardial infarctions. Collagen fibers, the main structural component of vascular tissue, have been observed to change orientation and align themselves with the principal stress direction. This study compared the principal stress direction in stenosed coronary arteries obtained from 3D fluid-structure interaction simulations to the orientation of collagen fibers in the fibrous cap of human specimens.

3D flow study in a mildly stenotic coronary artery phantom using a whole volume PIV method.

Blood flow dynamics has an important role in atherosclerosis initiation, progression, plaque rupture and thrombosis eventually causing myocardial infarction. In particular, shear stress is involved in platelet activation, endothelium function and secondary flows have been proposed as possible variables in plaque erosion. In order to investigate these three-dimensional flow characteristics in the context of a mild stenotic coronary artery, a whole volume PIV method has been developed and applied to a scaled-up transparent phantom.

[Use of positron-emission tomography with F18-fluorodeoxyglucose for the assessment of lung lesions suspicious of malignancy].

Positron-emission tomography (PET) with F18-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) is very helpful in the evaluation and management of lung lesions. It is specially useful for the characterization of solitary nodules, for the staging, evaluation of recurrence and therapeutic response in non-small cell lung cancer, for the evaluation of small cell lung cancer and for the assessment of pulmonary metastases. This article is a literature review on PET with FDG in lung cancer.

Image based biomechanics of coronary plaque.

In this chapter we present recent developments in the modeling of coronary artery biomechanics. We first introduce the pathology and localization of lesions in the circulatory system. Recent fluid and structural modeling of CAD is presented and discussed.

[Fluorodeoxiglucose F18 positron emission tomography imaging (F18FDG) for the assessment of rising levels of serum CA 19-9 in pancreatic mucinous cystadenocarcinoma. Report of one case].

We report a 38 year old female patient with a pancreatic mucinous cystadenocarcinoma. She presented at the onset with a peritoneal rupture that required emergency surgery. Five months later, the patient was subjected to a segmental pancreatectomy and splenectomy.
