G-protein-coupled receptor 41 in cardiomyocytes: Effect of butyrate on intracellular Ca and sarcomere shortening.

G-protein-coupled receptor 41 (GPR41) is a Gα-coupled receptor activated by short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Here, we tested that GPR41 is also expressed in cardiomyocytes and exerts a direct negative inotropic effect when activated by SCFA butyrate. Primary cardiomyocytes were isolated from wild-type (WT) and GPR41 knockout (GPR41) adult mice and intracellular Ca concentration and cell shortening were measured using the IonOptix system.

Resistin predicts disease severity and survival in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Background: Abnormal remodeling of distal pulmonary arteries in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) leads to progressively increased pulmonary vascular resistance, followed by right ventricular hypertrophy and failure. Despite considerable advancements in PAH treatment prognosis remains poor. We aim to evaluate the potential for using the cytokine resistin as a genetic and biological marker for disease severity and survival in a large cohort of patients with PAH.

A framework for robotic excavation and dry stone construction using on-site materials.

Automated building processes that enable efficient in situ resource utilization can facilitate construction in remote locations while simultaneously offering a carbon-reducing alternative to commonplace building practices. Toward these ends, we present a robotic construction pipeline that is capable of planning and building freeform stone walls and landscapes from highly heterogeneous local materials using a robotic excavator equipped with a shovel and gripper. Our system learns from real and simulated data to facilitate the online detection and segmentation of stone instances in spatial maps, enabling robotic grasping and textured 3D scanning of individual stones and rubble elements.

Diagnosis and management of a ruptured 20-week anencephalic cornual ectopic pregnancy undergoing termination: implications of interstate travel due to restrictive abortion law.

In the changing legal environment of obstetric care in the USA, with laws in many states banning termination at all stages of pregnancy with narrow exemptions, healthcare providers are encountering cases in which risk to maternal safety is increased. This report presents a case of a 28-year-old primigravida with an anencephalic fetus who was legally unable to pursue termination in her home state. She traveled to another state in order to pursue safe and legal abortion of a non-viable fetus.
