This paper presents a single-subject case study illustrating the need to closely examine effects of dialect from syllable position on l-colouring, and the effects of domain-initial strengthening in General American English. Auditory sensitivity and processing ability were evaluated in a patient who suffered from hyperacusis, difficulty understanding speech, withdrawn depression, lethargy, and hypersensitivity to touch, pressure, and light. Treatment with fluvoxamine and fluoxetine (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) reversibly alleviated complaints. Testing while medicated and unmedicated (after voluntary withdrawal from medication for several weeks) revealed no difference in pure-tone thresholds, speech thresholds, word recognition scores, tympanograms, or acoustic reflex thresholds.

The biomechanical movements of vocal structures are shown to control flow of expiratory air for the production of speech sounds. Laminar and turbulent air flow are discussed as they relate to sound generation. Theoretic and therapeutic utility of air flow profiles in differentiating linguistic contrasts and vocal characteristics are discussed along with considerations of relative utility and accuracy for various flow-measuring devices and strategies.

Five nonsingers and five singers vocally matched the pitches of frequency modulated tones. Subject responses to the shadowing task were analyzed in terms of accuracy, and in terms of duration and speed characteristics of pitch changes. In addition, each frequency change was categorized according to hit, overshoot, undershoot, or oscillate patterns.
