The Peruvian-Brazilian border is a highly endemic tegumentary leishmaniasis region in South America. The interoceanic highway is a commercial route that connects Peru and Brazil through Madre de Dios and has raised concerns about its impact on previously undisturbed areas. In order to assess leishmaniasis transmission risk along this highway, we conducted a surveillance study of the sand fly populations in this area.

Haemaphysalis longicornis, the cattle tick or bush tick, has an extended distribution throughout Asia and the Pacific region, including China, Russia, the Republic of Korea (ROK), Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific islands. It is an obligate ectoparasite found commonly on medium to large sized wild and domestic animals, with humans as an accidental host. Haemaphysalis longicornis transmits a number of pathogens, including severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome and tick-borne encephalitis viruses, bacteria, helminths, and protozoans, that impact on veterinary (wild and domestic animals) and human health.

Coupled oscillators were believed to exclusively exist in a state of synchrony or disorder until Kuramoto theoretically proved that the two states could coexist, called a chimera state, when portions of the population had a spatial dependent coupling. Recent work has demonstrated the spontaneous emergence of chimera states in an experiment involving mechanical oscillators coupled through a two platform swing. We constructed an experimental apparatus with three platforms that each contains a population of mechanical oscillators in order investigate the effects of a network symmetry on naturally arising chimera states.
